Stress. It may come in waves or continuously lurk in the background. One of the most biggest questions I have gotten recently is what effect stress has on our skin. . It has been well-established that stress slows wound healing, promotes premature aging, impairs skin barrier function leading to dryness, and even worsens inflammatory conditions like eczema and rosacea. Perhaps the most common stress related issue is the development of acne. Our bodies prepare themselves for stress by increasing levels of certain hormones. The same hormones also impact our oil glands, stimulating oil production, and causing stress breakouts. Stress acne occurs throughout the entire face and looks like red, angry bumps and pus pimples. . To treat stress acne, switch your cleanser to one that contains salicylic acid. This B-hydroxyacid removes excess oil and dead cells from the surface of the skin to keep the pores clear. Think of these cleansers like shorts contact therapies. Lather and let them sit while you sing the alphabet before rinsing off to give them time to do their job. Consider a benzoyl peroxide leave-on to lower levels of acne causing bacteria, reduce inflammation, and open up pimples. And of course, the best way to treat stress acne is to prevent stress. Whether it’s yoga, meditation, music, or aromatherapy, do what you can to keep your body and mind at ease. If OTC treatments are not helping, visit a dermatologist, even through a video visit.
